• Four Trends for Outdoor Kitchen Spaces

Stamped Concrete Patio with Outdoor Kitchen, Fireplace, and SeatingSpring is in the air and our thoughts are turning to beautiful and functional outdoor kitchens. While most of us already have a backyard grill, there are many ways to enhance your outdoor spaces no matter your budget or climate. Let’s take a look at some of the top trends in outdoor kitchens!

Trend #1: Go beyond the slab

fenced-in wood plank stamped patio with grill and seating
    Looks like wood…without the trees!

We’ve all seen patios consisting of a sad little square of grey concrete. Concrete is durable, cost-effective, and low maintenance. However, with so many tinting and stamping options available, concrete can be versatile and beautiful! Don’t settle for a boring slab. Proline’s concrete stamps will meet any design needs, whether you want the look of brick, reclaimed wood planks, stone, or slate. (Contractors will especially love Proline’s Seamless Magnetic Pattern Concrete Sets, which are lighter than traditional skins but twice as rigid and practically indestructible.)

And what about color? Concrete can shine thanks to acid stains, color hardener, antiquing wash, and acrylic stains in any color and combination you could want. There are a variety of methods that professionals use for tinting concrete. Ask your contractor about the optimal method for your particular project, climate, and usage.

    Trend #2: Concrete patio edging

A patio needs edging to define the space and keep grass at bay. Concrete edging is popular because not only does it give you a clean look, but it’s durable and easily cleaned. Consider adding in planters, flowerbeds, or even low walls to help define your patio. For a utilitarian option, concrete countertops can be incorporated into the edging to give your patio a seamless, custom look with plenty of workspace.

Trend #3: Amp up the grilling situation

A simple gas or charcoal grill can get the job done but today there are so many luxury-style grills available at affordable prices. Why not upgrade? If you walk into any big box home improvement store, you’ll find a wide variety of options that offer flexibility and quality.  Thanks to the proliferation of add-on features, such as side burners, variable temperature control, warming racks, and even searing grills, you can find exactly what you want. Hybrid grills even give users the option to switch between charcoal and gas. Once you have your grill, think about other types of cooking options you might enjoy, like a smoker, open-flame cooking, or even a pizza oven. If your budget is on the high end, outdoor sinks, wine coolers, refrigerators, and more are becoming increasingly popular.

    Trend #4: Cover it up

To ensure your area can be used no matter the season, consider partially enclosing your patio to protect it from heat and rain. A closed-roof awning can be as simple or as complex as you like, while protecting your valuable furniture and appliances. From metal, glass, or plexiglass canopies, to a variety of wood options, a roof over your patio is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in comfort. If you don’t mind being exposed to the elements, options like fabric covers, vine-covered lattices, or exposed beams can provide shade with max style.

  • World of Concrete 2020

World of Concrete 2020 was an incredible event, packed with interesting demos and great new products. We loved chatting with our customers and meeting some new friends, too! Conference organizers estimate 54,000 professionals attended this year, and over 1,300 companies exhibited.

Proline’s booths were busier than ever with exciting demonstrations and new product highlights. The Pocono Bluestone Large Ashlar Magnetic set was unveiled, as well as two patterns still in the R&D phase, Sand and Reclaimed Timber. Proline continues to take the innovation to the next level and our customers can’t wait until these two sets are available!

live edge table moldWe poured the Live Edge Table Mold and the American Flag Plaque with  PROCAST, Proline’s GFRC mix for countertops, table molds, and more. Customers jumped in to help stain and color the pieces using Proline Accent Color. The new seamless Oak Bark texture was a popular new product along with the new Roman Slate Bench Mold (15” x 60” x 3”).

Portland Concrete provided their annual economic forecast, which they believe will see “continued moderate economic growth“. This growth is based on dollars spent on construction and overall cement consumption, as well as strong consumer demand and a solid labor market.

Companies introduced exciting new innovations. Hilti’s new Tracefast system uses a smartphone app to scan the data code on the head of an anchor bolt for a simple confirmation of an anchor’s type and strength. Case Construction Equipment’s launched a new B-Series equipment consisting of five compact track loaders and eight skid steers with redesigned cabs and intuitive interfaces. Stilh introduced a Bluetooth-enabled asset management system that can work with any tool that creates magnetic flux.

A silent auction held by Concrete Industry Management (CIM) generated over $1.2 million dollars for its program, which broke all prior records. CIM is a business program developed to provide students with a Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management. The goal of the program is to create graduate who are knowledgeable in construction management and concrete technology and techniques, while providing them with real life work experience early in their careers. world of concrete 2020

    Job by Baltz and Sons

I admit it, I love the metallics and Baltz and Sons seems to love them too.  Some of my all time favorite jobs were created with metallic coloring systems. Metallic coloring is available in epoxies and we stock Cohills in several different colors.  With any job, creating a unique and natural appearance is key.baltzandsonscreativesun

  • The World of Concrete 2015 was busier than ever this year. Proline’s booth was hopping and I got to meet several of my customers as well as create bonds with new customers. It was also great seeing those of you I’ve met in past years.  Several of you took advantage of our yearly 20% off sale during the month of February for the World of Concrete attendees. There were some fantastic savings for those of you that saved up and purchased the large quantities. One customer saved $2500.

Some new items were introduced at the Wold of Concrete.  Most popular was the new reclaimed wood series. Proline introduced the new 16″ wide by 8′ long reclaimed wood stamps as well as a reclaimed wood bench mold (16″ x 5′) and table top molds in two different sizes (52 x 37 in. and 72 x 37 in.)

  • Concrete Stamping Mistakes To Avoid

    UPDATED FOR 2022!

Here at Calico, we’ve been in the industry for a long time. And we’ve seen a thing or two when it comes to concrete stamps! Learn from our experience and avoid these common mistakes we’ve seen over and over again.

    Attempting to color-match

Please don’t try it! Color is tricky business and photographs of concrete stamp jobs will look only as accurate as your computer or phone allows. Even then, your image may still not be accurate enough. Do not guarantee that a color will come out exactly the same as a picture. Let your customer know that what looks like a soft beige in a picture on a website may in fact be nothing close to a soft beige. If you are unfamiliar with a color combination, make a sample and show your customer ahead of time.

Picking the wrong stamp for your skill level

For beginners, an easy rule to remember is to keep it simple. Don’t pick a pattern that is complicated if you’re stamping for the first time. Stick to the easier stamps, like a seamless concrete stamp. Seamless stamps are easier because you can lay them down in any direction. As long as they overlap, you won’t have to think too much on what goes here and what goes there.

Seamless stamps are also a great way to learn about the timing of stamped concrete. How long will it take you to use a 12” x 12” based tamper on a 5’ x 5’ seamless stamp (you have to hit every inch of that stamp) and get the 1,000-square-foot job done before the concrete gets hard? By using a seamless stamp, there won’t be any mortar lines or grout lines to touch up, either. Remember, the stamp is only going to do so much. Touch up and hand tooling are necessary parts of concrete stamping.  If you select a brick pattern, get ready to touch up many of those mortar lines and be prepared because it’s going to take more time.  That’s why we always encourage beginners to learn with seamless stamps.

    Herringbone Red Concrete Stamp

    Laying the stamps down incorrectly

Don’t guess. Ask for a guide on how to lay the stamps down if you are unfamiliar with them. We have several Proline placement guides that can show you the correct way to lay a particular pattern down. Don’t wait until the concrete is getting hard to figure out you’re not sure about what you are doing.

    Not sealing

How many jobs get destroyed by not following the directions when applying sealer? You’ve seen it, color coming up or white clouds in the concrete. Applying sealant is a crucial step in any job. It maintains and enriches the color of concrete, whether the color is integral, a stain, a dye, or from a color hardener. Sealers can add gloss, too. Most importantly, sealers preserve concrete by helping prevent wear and tear.

    Not scheduling properly

We’ve heard this before. “I need the stamps yesterday.” Concrete stamping is often an outdoor activity dependent on Mother Nature and timing is critical to making that end-of-year profit. Squeezing in as many jobs as possible is key and we’re very familiar with the homeowner that’s having the outdoor party or wedding and needs the job done NOW. That said, don’t rely on the stamps or color arriving perfectly and according to what you were told. We all know how staff and inventory shortages have run rampant since the pandemic started and unfortunately, our industry is no different. Even prior to Covid, shipping incidents could occur, preventing an essential stamp from getting delivered on time. No matter what, check every delivery of stamps and supplies upon receipt and allow time for errors.
